About Us:

Medical Detection Dogs is based in Great Horwood and trains dogs to alert to the odour of human disease.

The charity has two specific areas of work:

  • Cancer Detection Dogs: can detect the minute odours associated with many cancers. Specialist dogs trained to detect cancer volatiles can provide valuable information that will assist in the early diagnosis of cancer. Current studies which have received ethical approval are on breast and prostate cancer and we have recently announced that we are working on a study to see whether dogs have the potential to detect malaria. Each Cancer Detection Dog costs £7,200 to train.
  • Medical Alert Assistance Dogs: are trained for individuals with life threatening conditions such as unstable Type 1 Diabetes, PoTS (Postural Tachycardia Syndrome), fluctuating mineral corticoid levels in Addison’s disease and patients with extreme allergies prone to anaphylactic shock. We have also trained the world’s first airborne nut allergy dog. Our services are offered to individuals throughout the UK. Each Medical Alert Assistance Dog costs the charity £11,200 to train and accredit through ADUK, plus £750 yearly ongoing support costs.

Lack of funds is slowing our progress.

We are incredibly grateful to you for your support. EVERY PENNY counts towards the training of another specialist dog.

Thank you so much for your support, and I hope you win a fabulous prize on the Vale Lottery.
